Chapter 5
I’m not sure how TekNorth expects me to work in these conditions. The stupid deadlines, that buzzing fluorescent light the maintenance guy swears he’ll fix tomorrow, the lack of both blood and management—it wears on a man, you know?
And then there’s the instant messages. The company insists we all use them because that would somehow make things more efficient than calling or emailing. Like, have these guys ever used instant messengers? Do they know how distracting it is to be working—ping—and getting—ping—messages from—ping—people who could just—ping—send a goddamned—ping—email that I could respond—ping ping—to when I’m not so—ping ping ping—busy?
I close my eyes and take a deep breath. Then I open them and continue working on the email that I need to send before Samir comes in here again and—
Ping.
I grit my teeth until I see the name on the new IM box that’s flashing on the bottom of my screen:
Zane Webber.
The grit becomes a grin, and I click on the window. There’s just one word:
Hungry?
All the air rushes out of my lungs. The absence of my heartbeat is conspicuous just like it always is when Zane reminds me of his existence, and I swear I can feel the phantom beats speeding up at the thought of biting him.
Samir can wait. My mouth is watering and I write back, I could eat.
He’s typing. Then he’s not. Then he is again. Finally, Breakroom in 5?
I blink. No parking garage? No patio? The breakroom? Where we could get caught?
A thrill rushes through me. It’s stupid, I know, but the thought of being busted with my hand down Zane’s pants or my teeth in his neck is turning me on something fierce. I can barely remember what it’s like to feed off someone’s arm—lately it’s been Zane’s neck or, when we’re definitely alone, his thigh. Christ, it’s hot.
Job security be damned; I can’t wait until we get home.
See you in 5, I write back, and as soon as the message is gone, so am I.
There’s a new blood drive poster on the wall, and it just makes me laugh. Not the poster itself or the blood drive—I fully support it, after all—but the sheer giddiness of not being a hangry wreck. It seems like ages since my days as a disgruntled employee who’d take one look at that poster and see red. Well, figuratively see red. The poster’s red, so seeing red is—anyway. Point is, my entire attitude has done a one-eighty since that first night with Zane in my bed. Sex, blood, weed, and the most gorgeous man I’ve ever seen—what more could a vampire want?
I let myself into the empty breakroom. It’s just me, the sad bowl of fruit, and my half-erect dick that’s going to be painfully hard as soon as Zane gets here. Hopefully he’ll—
Out of nowhere, strong hands turn me around, and before I can even register that I’m startled, I’m pinned to the wall and locked in a deep, hard kiss. Oh God. Oh God, yes. I wrap my arms around his neck and let him manhandle me.
